Hiking is a wonderful way to get acquainted with the Kalunga community, consisting of former runaway slaves, who settled in Cavalcante nearly two centuries ago. The Cerrado culture is a vibrant mix of African and Native Americans.
At the end of the trail, you can enjoy the Santa Bárbara waterfall, considered to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Chapada. It consists of emerald-green waters with springs that come from the ground. The 5 km hike should take you about an hour and a half.
In the morning, transfer to the Kalunga Community. Hike 5 km to the Santa Bárbara waterfall; indulge in a refreshing bath, and free dive in the emerald-green waters of the lagoon. After lunch, transfer to the pousada.

Climate - Chapada has two well-defined seasons: the dry season is from April to October, while the rainy season is from October to May. Both seasons are beautiful in their individual ways.
Trails - It is important to bring light clothes (t-shirts and trousers), bathing suits, canteen, comfortable walking shoes, backpack, sun block, hats or caps, repellents and camera. For rainy months, a good light rain-coat is necessary.
Clothes - Besides those mentioned above, bring warm clothing for nights and light clothes for the day.
Money - In Alto Paraíso, you can withdraw money at Itaú (Mon to Fri from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm) and at the agencies of the Banco do Brasil (Mon to Fri from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm). In the village of São Jorge, there are no banks. There are no foreign currencies exchanges either.
In Cavalcante, a few establishments accept credit card. The main supermarket takes VisaElectron and RedeShop. The banks of the city are: Banco do Brasil (Mon to Fri from 9.00 am to 12.00 pm - auto-assistance until 10.00 pm) and Banco Bradesco (Mon to Fri from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm - in the agency of the Post office). There are no foreign currency exchanges. Bring money, credit card and cash. Exchange your traveller's checks at the airport.
Communication - Both Alto Paraíso and São Jorge provide good signals for cellular and local operators: Vivo, Claro and BrasilTelecom. Alto Paraíso also has cyber cafes. Cavalcante has good cell phone service (only Vivo). It has cyber cafes too.
